Case Study: LPG Kenya

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a by-product of both oil refining and gas production. It is a very clean fuel and can replace the use of wood fuels and kerosene in rural areas. It is considered to be of major importance in reducing de-forestation in Africa and is the subject of an important study between the World Bank and the World LPG Association.

PDC won a tender from the Ministry of Energy in Kenya to carry out a study on LPG supply and demand in the East Africa region, and to prepare preliminary design of the required infrastructure. The work was carried out in association with Economic Consulting Associates who prepared the demand forecasts and Trident Engineering who prepare the design and costings.

The project was completed within a rapid five month project schedule. It recommended that additional facilities be built in Mombasa and Nairobi as well as other sites throughout the country. Based on our recommendations, the Government has appointed the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) to construct a 6,000 tonne storage and cylinder filling facility in Mombasa at a cost of $5 million to be completed in December 2007. KPC will also be constructing a further facility in Nairobi.
